There is something, and I think it's a very primitive something, in humanity that loves to think we're on the brink of disaster. I think you make some good, lucid points, but...when people want to believe the sky is falling, it's difficult to convince them that it was just a bit of acorn hitting their skull. The sky is soooo much more dra-ma-tic!
