As the landing craft stopped, all hundred of us stepped out onto the beach. On the coast stood an enormous, ash coloured cliff. The jagged, rocky surface of the cliff was partially concealed by thick, frog- green moss. As we staggered along the vast beach, our worn out leather boots created footprints on the smooth sand. We wore muddy khaki uniforms and carried rifles on our shoulders. The weakest and strongest of us alike, gripped tightly onto our crucifixes. The deafening sounds of exploding grenades and firing machine guns didn’t show any sign of welcoming us. Many fell dead right at the spot of arrival. Tripping now and then, I struggled my way through the ground littered with countless dead bodies. Doubtlessly it was a feast for the starving sea which soon turned deep red swallowing the dead bodies. The atmosphere was saturated wit
